FREQUENT QUESTIONS
What exactly is a bioclimatic pergola?
It is a robust, modern-design aluminum structure whose roof is made up of motorized adjustable louvers. Unlike a fixed pergola or an awning, these louvers allow you to ‘play’ with the weather: you can open them to let in light and air, tilt them to get shade with natural ventilation, or close them completely to create a watertight roof that protects from rain and intense sun.
How does it differ from a wooden pergola or a traditional awning?
The main difference is its versatility and durability. While an awning only provides shade and a wooden pergola requires a lot of maintenance, the bioclimatic pergola regulates temperature naturally (the ‘bioclimatic’ effect) thanks to the air circulation between the louvers. It is 100% waterproof when closed and is made of high-strength aluminum that withstands the coastal climate with almost no maintenance.
Are they really waterproof when it rains? What happens to the water?
Yes, when the louvers are closed, the roof is completely watertight. They are designed with a smart rubber and sealing system. In addition, the structure features an integrated drainage system hidden within the posts. When it rains, the water is collected by the louvers, flows to the perimeter gutters, and drains down through the inside of the legs, preventing water from pouring down onto your terrace.
Can they withstand the strong winds of the area?
Absolutely. Our bioclimatic pergolas are highly robust structures made of high-quality extruded aluminum. They are designed and tested to withstand significant wind loads, much greater than those an articulated arm awning can endure. They are the safest option for wind-exposed areas near the sea.
Do the intense sun and the salty coastal environment affect the material?
Aluminum is the ideal material for our climate. It does not rust like iron or crack like wood from the sun. Furthermore, we use high-quality powder coatings (usually Qualicoat certified) that guarantee excellent resistance to marine corrosion and UV fading.
How do the louvers move? Is it complicated?
It is very simple. The system is motorized and conveniently controlled from a remote control or, if you prefer, via an app on your mobile phone. With a single button, you can adjust the louvers to the exact angle you desire.
What happens if it starts raining and I'm not home?
You don’t need to worry. We highly recommend installing rain and wind sensors. If the sensor detects rain, the louvers will close automatically to protect your terrace furniture. If it detects excessively strong winds, the louvers can open slightly to relieve pressure on the structure (safety mode).
Does it create a greenhouse effect underneath when it is very hot?
On the contrary. That is the magic of the ‘bioclimatic’ concept. If you open the louvers slightly on a hot summer day, the warm air (which tends to rise) escapes through the gaps, creating a natural air current (convection) that lowers the temperature under the pergola by several degrees compared to the outside. You will be much cooler than under a closed canvas awning.
Where can they be installed?
They adapt to almost any space. They can be installed ‘attached’ to the facade of the house (ideal for extending the living room onto the terrace) or ‘freestanding’ (like an independent island in the middle of the garden or next to the pool).
Can I customize my pergola? What extras can I add?
Customization is almost endless. You can choose from a wide range of RAL colors for the structure and the louvers. Furthermore, you can turn it into a true outdoor living room by adding:
- Integrated LED lighting in the louvers or around the perimeter (with a dimmer).
- Side enclosures: Motorized vertical blinds (screen type) for extra sun protection and privacy, or even glass curtains.
- Infrared heaters to enjoy the terrace on cool winter nights in Jávea.
Do I need a building permit to install it?
Generally, pergolas are considered lightweight and removable structures, so they often do not require a major building permit. However, urban planning regulations depend on each local town hall (Jávea, Dénia, Teulada-Moraira…). At Toldos Javea, we will advise you on the current status of local regulations in your municipality before installation.
How much maintenance do they require?
Minimal. Being made of aluminum, they only need periodic cleaning with water and a mild soap to remove dust or accumulated salt residue, and to check that the drains are not blocked by leaves. You will never have to sand or varnish them.
